St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Born on August 28, 1774, Elizabeth Seton was a New Yorker, a married woman and a mother.  Originally an Anglican, she became a Roman Catholic after she was widowed.  She founded the Sisters of Charity in 1809 and helped to develop the Catholic school system in the United States.  She died on January 4, 1821 at the age of 46.  

 

Elizabeth Ann Seton was beatified by Pope John XXIII on March 17, 1963. Pope Paul VI canonized her on September 14, 1975.  She is the first American-born person to be canonized.

St. John Neumann

Born on March 28, 1811, John Nepomucene Neumann was a Catholic priest from Bohemia who immigrated to the United States in 1836. He joined the Redemptorist order and on March 28, 1852 was installed as the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia.  

 

He is the first United States bishop to be canonized.  Bishop Neumann of Philadelphia founded the first Catholic diocesan school system in the United States.

On January 5, 1860, while doing errands, Neumann collapsed and was taken by Indians back tot he city where he later died.  

​

Bishop Neumann was beatified by Pope Paul VI during the Second Vatican Council on October 13, 1963.  He was canonized on June 19, 1977.
