Venerable Zepherin Namucura

Zepherin Namuncera, a member of the Araucano tribe of South America, was frequently the subject of ridicule because of his ancestry.  He never responded in kind, but placed his life and future under the patronage of Mary.  

​

Zepherin was educated at the Salesian mission school in Buenos Aires.  At the age of seventeen he went into the seminary where he became second in his class.  In April of 1904, due to his poor health, he went to study in Rome.  He health continued to decline and he died at the age of 18.  He was declared Venerable by Pope Paul VI in 1972.  

Fr. Luigi Variara

Born on January 15,, 1875 in Italy, Luigi Variara wa a priest and member of the Salesians of Don Bosco.  He served in the missions in Columbia for most of his life where he worked with lepers and the children of the outcast lepers.  He established the Daughters of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary to care for the orphans.  

 

Luigi Variara died on February 1 1923 and was beatified on April 14, 2002 by Popoe John Paul II.
