Junipero Serra

Born Miquel Josep Serra y Ferrer on November 24, 1713, Junipero Serra was a member of the Franbciscan Order who founded a mission in Baja, California.  

​

Serra established the first 9 of 21 Spanish missioins in California from San Diego to San Franciso.  

​

He died on August 28, 1784 at the age of 70 and was canonized on September 23, 2015 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington DC by Pope Francis.

Mother Cabrini

​

Born in Italy on July 15, 1850, Frances Xavier Cabrini was the founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Seeking the approval of the Pope Leo XIII, Cabrini wished to establish missions in China.  Instead, he asked that she go to the United States to help the Italian immigrants, many who were in great poverty.  

 

She became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1909.  Mother Cabrini died on December 22, 1917.  She was canonized by Pope Pius XII on July 7, 1946.  He feast day is November 13.

Pierre Toussaint

Venerable Pierre Toussaint was born in what is nw Haiti on June 27, 1766.  He was brought to New York City in 1787 and eventually gained his freedom.  He became a noted philanthropist to the poor of the city and along with his wife performed many charitible works.  

 

Pierre Toussaint died on July 30, 1853 and was declared "Venerable" by Pope John Paul II in 1996.  His cause for sainthood is currently being investigated.

Toussaint is the first layperson to be buried in the crypt below the main altar of St. Patrick's Cathedral, a place normally reserved for bishops of the Archdiocese of New York.
