St. Isaac Jogues

Isaac Jogues was born on January 10, 1607 in France.  Inspired by missionaries who returned to France from the New World, Jogues became a missionary who traveled and worked among the Iroquois, Huron and other Native American population in North America.

He, along with seven other Jesuit priests and laymen, was martyred in October of 1646.  Collectively known as the North American Martyrs, these men were canonized by the Catholic Church in 1930.   

St. Kateri Tekakwitha

Born near the town of Auriesville, New York in 1656, Kateri was the daughter of a Mohawk chief and a captive Algonquin mother.  Orphaned at the age of four, she was baptized by a Jesuit missionary at age twenty, and moved to a Christian colony of Iroquois in Canada.  Everyone was impressed by her faith, gentleness, kindness and devotion ot Christ crucified.

She of died of disease on April 17, 1680 at the age of 24.  She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 22, 1980 and was canonized on October 21, 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.
